Eurovision nightGot myself some ice cream and will be making myself compfy on the sofa so I'm ready for the big, glittery, horrible music, camp, pointless politics, drama that is eurovision. It never disappoints me. :la:
Sadly I will be alone for this one. Matt had to do a concert he didn't want to do, so I will be live tweeting (humonlazydiva) my impression of the whole shebang. :D
The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Well, we're home and our holiday was utterly fabulous, beyond our expectations :D I refuse to talk about the day every single biting insect in the country visited either me or J (I think we must have been walking around with signs visible only to bitey, flying things that said "All you can eat: come and get it!" over our heads.) So much for insect repellent ...

Mind you, collapsing into bed yesterday after a long and tiring journey only to wake and discover we had a power-cut - which lasted until 4.00pm today - was not the best of welcomes, especially as it's also grey, raining and bloody cold :o

Many thanks to all of you who left me "happy holidays" messages and/or commented on the pics I posted on my website - much appreciated! :) I hope no-one thought my last journal was entirely serious: a nice piece of silver jewellery was always on the agenda (and did, indeed, come to pass ;)) and it didn't exactly kill me to postpone dinner one night :D

I have about a thousand photos to cull and process which should keep me busy for a while. Expect fave'n'run while I work on that lot and also try and clear my watchlist.

Welcome back! Glad you had a warm escape....makes the cold a bit more tolerable! Sorry about the "bitey bugs".....we have 'em here too in the summer. Snow here already then rain.....maybe snow next week. You have a good winter there in the British Isles! :hug: :-) :-)

So do I, now! :D Already planning on going back next year but *definitely* a direct flight this time and no pratting about transferring at Miami, which was a right royal pain in the butt. We met lots of Americans there and are very jealous of the short flight times so many had.
