QuadCore Rocks!!

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 16, 2008, 6:32 AM
Gill

*blissful smile*

Just getting my new PC up and running and - of course - the first thing I wanted to do was test it out on a big UF render ;)

[QuadCore, 4Gb of 800Mhz RAM] + [UF .bmp  4200 x 4200px @ 350 dpi] = 44 minutes

I am green with envy on one side of the face, but only on one side. The other side remained pale because I am very happy for you :D
I am curious to hear how long your next apo render takes :D

 I'll be sure to recognise you then ;) Thanks B :D

I did a little experiment for Michael Faber (the conversation is in this Journal's comments) but the bit you'll be interested in in this:
I settled for 8150 x 5810 (jpg) It's been running for over 15 minutes and the remaining time counter is still leaping all over the place but at no time has the total of elapsed and remaining gone over 3 hrs 30 mins. That's with nothing else running , apart from AV and an open OpenOffice doc.

After 25 mins, looks like it will settle to 3hr 25mins.

What bugs me though is that an Apo render using all 4 cores @ 100% slows other stuff down MUCH more than a UF render using all 4 cores. I need to decide whether to only use 2 cores for Apo (when I want to do other things) or lower the priority of the process.

That's interesting. I did a render with flam3 using a batch render script and the render seemed to have taken up all my memory. I am still on my old Pentium 2. I don't remember having had such a memory shortage ever before. Last time I did a batch render, sometime in December, using flam3 I could continue with a little surfing or fiddling in apo with no problem. Unfortunately I don't remember what flam3 version I had used then nor what apo version I had been using. I read somewhere, some time ago that a quad core would not necessarily be better in view of rendering than a dual core but I forgot the argument. I thought I would do thorough inquires regarding this matter when I am ready for a pc upgrade. At the moment I just can't face the extra work.
I wonder how long the render finally took.

I rendered an Apo piece last night which took about 12 minutes. This afternoon I rendered a very slight tweak of it but before I did so, I changed the multithreading option in Apo from 4 to 2 .... and I found I could use my PC for other stuff without any trouble at all. The render took about 20 minutes. The task manager showed all 4 cores being used at more or less the same &, but that was around 50% whereas last night it was 100%.

I was beginning to think I was imagining it but lately - on the old PC - it was almost impossible to do anything else at the same time as using Apo.

What size, quality and OS did you get in 20 minutes?
It's exactly the same here. The pc makes more noise while rendering and during the render working on something is not the same as it used to be. I wonder what's up.

That was Quality 2000, FR 0.4, OS 2, size 1920 x 1440

I wonder if the change to plugins has affected Apo? I always used to be able to do other things relatively comfortably before than.

I wish I know what it was. Something seems to clog the memory more than before.
:omg: I just entered your render specifications into apo 2.05z for a fairly simple flame with 4 transforms + FX and the window indicates an expected render time of 10.26.44.81 :( Maybe I should hurry and update my pc whether I like it or not.

I understand your reluctance: it's a complete pain having to reinstall everything (i still have a few things to sort out) but I am very pleased I did.
