I mean as in it is similar to sytems like Aero and Surface. Obviously it is not a copycat of Microsoft's ideas.

It's scary...

Just think what would happen if such minds were focused on finding cures for some of the diseases of mankind... instead of very cool visual imaging techniques...

Weigh this up... virtual tour of Notre Dame cathedral from the comfort of one's home... or a cure for cancer/AIDS/common cold... ??? Puts it all into a bit of perspective, doesn't it?

It certainly does. I could be really argumentative and say that no matter how brilliant a software engineer is at his job, that doesn't mean he would necessarily be a great research scientist or doctor. But what grieves me a lot more than MS spending its own money to do this, is governments spending OUR money to increase the military & fight unnecessary wars. Don't get me started on THAT one! ;)
