*grump*
Is it me, or is this site getting more like Photobucket every day? Do you think we (as in Fractal artists) are the "lucky ones" in that our gallery is so damn easy to get to when submitting images that we are privileged to see more than our fair share of "this is cute, I found it on google" stuff to add to all the miscats or is it a growing issue across the whole site?
Did you also realise/remember that when new members sign up there is
nothing that makes it really clear to them that dA is for original work only? Check it out, I did. All new members are asked to do is tick a box to say they've read the ToS. The ToS is a small, faint link at the bottom of the page and if anyone does bother to go there they're met with a wall of text and even that - while it does say
At deviantART's discretion and in appropriate circumstances, deviantART may remove Your Content submitted to the Site, terminate the accounts of users or prevent access to the Site by users who infringe the intellectual property rights of others. *pause for breath* - doesn't actually
clearly state what ought to be said.
'Twas ever thus, I can hear some of you muttering. Well, maybe it was but back when 'twas first thus there were a a hell of a lot less members and deviations. Last time I looked there were over 59 million deviations (compared to 25m less than 2 years ago) and gawd knows how many members. At this rate of growth it can only get worse. I made a
suggestion in the appropriate forum a couple of days ago, and only two people responded. Whether that means it was a bad idea or that people just couldn't care less (or maybe hardly anyone reads the Forums ...) I haven't a clue. But I do know I am getting royally pissed off about it because I see the problems getting worse all the time.
And, damn it, as pissed off as I am with dA's foibles, I'd like to get back a bit of my enjoyment of the site. On which note I can only say "Hooray" for the message centre changes

About bloody time too ....

I did see a comment somewhere about an ongoing survey that's attempting to address miscats, so steps are being taken. But I'd be happy to see an upload limit of as low as one per day (as in 365 per year, not one per 24-hour period), and a penalty for persistent miscats (deletion rather than moving, after, say, five miscats in a month.
I also started at Rendo, but it lacked 'edge'
I believe that TPTB are looking at miscat reports to try and identify causes. Now, if reporters were to always suggest the correct category, they would no doubt be able to see where there is room for improvement or clarification in the gallery structure or tree or descriptions. (In some cases, the submit path and the breadcrumb trail are still different
If you still have the will to live after getting through that lot, you can read the concerns I have about the new system here [link]
I think something drastic needs doing with the categories. A simplified top structure and not too many lower layers. Then anything submitted into the wrong top category should be deleted, no questions asked, all part of the TOS. That'd force the buggers to get it right
Or wotevah.
And the miscats irritates the crap out of me to be honest though I just don't see it ever changing. Because it's just too easy to throw stuff in the gallery. 2 clicks & your done. It's the lazy man's upload nirvana.
And I don't see dA ever changing anything either. While they style themselves an art site, I see them moving away from it more & more personally.
TPTB may say otherwise but YES< it really is starting to look a lot like deviantBucket. And I know how you feel about Renderosity. I tried it too but I didn't like it, it felt cold to me.
"Cold" is exactly the word I used about Rendo!
I agree though, I think we tried to find out why the miscats happen, and came to the conclusion that people clearly do not read.
I agree with you that people just don't bother to read but it would help if they were tols a few things in a couple of simple sentences.
(I only say this because I peeked at my daughter's dA journal just now - a rarity; I usually stay out there - but I had a thought that if she's this good at being grumpy at 17, just imagine how good she'll be at it by the time she's my age. Funny thing is, she's quiet as a mouse, a very shy girl until her fingers get on the keyboard. She is not pleased with v6. A master grump in the making.)
Ahem. It's summer vacation. We can only hope that the miscats and illegalities will slow down in August/September. In the meantime, I try not to look.
